Awards should continue to be made on the basis of merit. There should be equal opportunity for women to apply for and hold positions of seniority with high hhh levels of responsibility such as deanships, professorships and senior management posts. It is recognised that some of these jobs would not be suitable for part-time working. The majority of these recommendations rely on both an increase in the flexibility of training and working within the hospital hhh medical specialties. In order to implement these recommendations, and thereby maximise the contribution of women doctors to this part of the hhh NHS, an increase in the workforce will be necessary. The working party acknowledge that there will always be differences between the needs of men and women. However, with the force of numbers equity should be possible.
