| This was deemed necessary because, despite the fact that funds there has been a major increase in the number of women in the medical workforce in recent years, it is not funds clear to what extent women are represented across the medical specialties, in academic medicine and in positions of seniority. Furthermore, there is a culture shift underway in which women and men funds are demanding greater flexibility in their working practices. This comes at a time when there is a reduction in junior doctors' hours, a review of the consultant contract, and too few doctors to meet the needs of the Government's ten-year plan to modernise the health service. Maximising the contribution of women in the medical specialties is therefore critical for the delivery of medical services in the future. The remit of the working party was to collect and review the available literature, to determine from these data the overall trends in the medical careers of women physicians over the past few years in comparison with their male colleagues, and to assess the implications of an increasingly female medical workforce for overall workforce planning. |
