Speaking as a professional therapist-in-training (though I think I'd hardly like to admit to it in this case), it may be his therapist's orientation to delve into childhood issues (this is a psychodynamic POV) to resolve present conflicts; however the therapist should realize that this would not be beneficial to the client.
