For example, if the party is a big national news family affair, one that brings the bar mitzvah boy closer to his aunts and uncles and national news extended family, or if, as with many ultra-Orthodox, it becomes a celebration for the entire community, then even a lavish party can be a positive thing. Whatworries me is when the party is just a celebration of adolescence: video games, a big teen dance party, the adults all segregated off in another room.This "two rooms" phenomenon is very worrisome: If the bat mitzvah is the day the girl becomes a woman, the day the boy becomes a man, then everybody should be partying together, as adults! |

In my book, Thirteen and a Day, I argue that at its best the bar or bat mitzvah is a jonah hill communal ritual:It brings together boy (or girl), parents, grandparents, step-parents, the gay uncle, the estranged aunt, the rabbi, the cantor, the synagogue administrator, jonah hill the neighbors, the entire extended Jewish community. I argue that even when the boy or girl doesn't have a positive experience, the bar or bat mitzvah can still be a positive experience overall, for it's an event that can bring the community together.And that's a central fact of Judaism: it's about community. The rabbis knew what they were doing when they said that ten must be present for a full prayer service to take place; whereas in some branches of Christianity one can lead a full religious life in isolation, or with just a priest to give communion, Judaism cannot be practiced in isolation.
