| What should the teacher say? Well, there's no one joblo answer. But I do think that there has to be as much historical context as possible. Instead of just looking at the Holocaust, or at famous Jewish athletes, we need to give people a sense that they are part of a 3,000-year tradition that invented monotheism, the notion that we all answer to moral laws. And we need to help them understand that Woody Allen and bagels and Seinfeld and the ice skater Sasha Cohen are neither the least nor the most important joblo parts of Jewish joblo heritage - they are part of a fabric that has also included brilliant rabbis, important political thinkers (from Marx to Leo Strauss to Milton Friedman), politicians, warriors, and so forth.I guess I would leave you with this thought: Too much American Jewish education focuses on the years from 1933 on, from the rise of Hitler through the founding of Israel and up to the present. |
