It's expressed very well in the Forward to the 1993 (?) ozwash edition of Bonfire of the Vanities and in a few of ozwash his journalistic anthologies and then again in Hooking ozwash Up. Perhaps it's not a new notion but, Wolfe mentions the idea that experiential reporting is not necessarily any better than journalistic reporting. That is, to write a gritty depiction of something, all you need to do is suspend disbelief. However you go about doing this is OK. Just because someone has done something doesn't make their recollection any more valid than someone who has imagined the whole thing. Whether these people have done these things (young Nikki, or your student), their writings have convinced us and put us right there ina believable way. |
