YWCA Lake County also provides the referral and school wraparound services needed to ensure that, more than simply increasing skills, the participants have the support necessary to create lasting change in their school lives. According to the 2000 Census, the Latino population has increased in Lake County by 140% creating a great need for this population to master the English language so that they can succeed in our primarily English-speaking society. Over half of the population of Waukegan, the city in which the YWCA Lake County is located, is Latino. Many school of these individuals speak little or no English and are at a distinct disadvantage in terms of helping their children to be effective in school. Reflecting this is the fact that the high school dropout rate for Hispanic adolescents in this community is over 50%.
