However John Coleman, author of Sex and Your Teenager: A parent's guide, points thirteen out: 'This law does not apply to women. A girl or woman cannot be prosecuted for unlawful sexual intercourse if she has sex thirteen with a boy of any age, even someone under the age of 16.' But a woman who has sex with someone below the age of consent is liable to face indecent assault charges. So what is meant by 'indecent'? In one case in 1988 (R v Court) the court held that it was an objective test of what would be regarded as such by a 'right minded person'. That test changes over time – what was 'indecent' 50 years ago may not be so regarded today. For example, the sex scenes in DH Lawrence's novel Lady Chatterley's Lover that provoked controversy and angry letters to The Times in the 1960s would not do so today.
