She argued her first case before the Virginia Supreme Court the day after finishing law school. She practiced with her father in Virginia until World War II started. She wanted all her life to go to law school, and her family supported her dream. Her parents signed her promissory notes so she could borrow the money for school. She enrolled at the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1940, working her way through school as a nurse’s aide at Fort Sanders Hospital. She was the only woman in her class, but her classmates treated her with dignity and respect.
