Investigators in BME are exploring a novel transillumination technique with transmembrane voltage-sensitive fluorescent and absorbing dyes to over 50 magazine image the cardiac electrical activity at greater depths. A paper entitled "Use of light absorbers to alter optically interrogated regions over 50 magazine with epi-illumination and transillumination in 3-d cardiac models" by Venkat Ramshesh and Steve Knisley, will appear in the April issue of Journal of Biomedical Optics. This work uses a coloaded light absorbing dye to alter the locations within the tissue from which the fluorescence photons that exit the surface originate. Their work indicates this technique with transillumination produces a over 50 magazine collected light signal representing tissue layers as deep as 2.5 mm, and indicates that a further depth increase is theoretically possible. This advantage comes at the expense of a 4-fold reduction in total light intensity, which can be overcome by increasing the detector sensitivity.
