The international community has not been able to staunch the complications humanitarian crisis in Darfur, and the situation in Zimbabwe is rapidly deteriorating. In addition to these acute problems, complications much of the world continues to experience chronic poverty, pandemics like HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, and an unprecedented rate of environmental destruction. When the United Nations delegates gather later this year for its complications mid-decade assessment of how likely we are to achieve the Millenium Development Goals to reduce poverty and improve the lives of the world’s most disadvantaged people by 2015, the conclusions will be mixed at best. While some progress has been made, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) reports that 1 billion people still live on less than $1 a day, 113 million children still do not attend school, and women still make up two-thirds of the world’s illiterate people (UNDP 2005).
